Proving that this decade really is the 1980s in quotation marks, Michael Jackson, right, announced on Thursday that he would perform a series of concerts in London this summer, in what he called a “final curtain call,” Reuters reported. Mr. Jackson, 50, revealed the details of the concerts at a news conference in London, where he said he would perform 10 shows at the O2 Arena, beginning July 8. “When I say this is it, I mean this is it,” Mr. Jackson said, according to Reuters. “I’ll be performing the songs my fans want to hear.” The shows would be Mr. Jackson’s first major performances since 2001 and 2002, when he appeared at a pair of 30th anniversary celebrations and two benefit concerts. His brief appearance at the World Music Awards in 2006 was booed by some audience members.

It was a marked change from the frenzy that followed his “HIStory” tour announcement in 1996, suggesting that Wacko Jacko is the human equivalent of fizzy water gone flat.

In a bizarre move (which is what we’ve come to expect from the eccentric artist), Jacko actually announced both his comeback and his retirement. After the fallen King of Pop touted the live dates, he said they’ll also serve as the final concerts of his career. All will take place at London’s O2 Arena.

“I’ll be performing songs my fans wanna hear,” he told his assembled “crowd.” “This is it ... this is the final curtain call. When I say this, I really mean this.”

But it doesn’t seem like anyone is going to be that disappointed if he keeps his promise. Despite various reports that claim Jackson hopes to add shows totaling 25 in all, Jacko has little hope of topping the “HIStory” tour, which grossed $178 million.

The current “tour” is being promoted by AEG, the world’s second-largest promoter. Company president Tim Leiweke told Billboard magazine that his company had been trying to woo Jackson for two years. He even pooh-poohed any talk of the star being mentally unstable, and said Jackson went through a physical at the company’s behest.

“The man is very sane, the man is very focused, the man is very healthy,” he said. “I think he has been dragged through the mud.”

His finances sure have. Last year, the 50-year-old former star sold his Neverland ranch, along with thousands of personal items, to raise cash. He’s reported to be millions of dollars in debt, which has led to speculation that Jackson agreed to the London dates solely for financial reasons.

MJ’s career and reputation have been in tatters since he went on trial for child molestation in 2005, though he was acquitted of all charges. More recently, rumors have surfaced he was suffering from a lung disease, which his spokespeople have vigorously denied.
